Hams Host Scouts for JOTA

Scouts at the Otschodela Council’s Foothill District Camporee take turns making SSB contacts on station WA2AIX, Oct 18, 2008.

A total of 33 Scouts from 8 Troops and 1 Weebelos Den talked on ham radio to earn a pocket patch commemorating the “51st. JOTA” or Jamboree On The Air. The station was set up on Relay Rd. [no repeater pun intended] in the town of Stamford, NY on NYS land.

A favorite of Scouts was sending their name via a Code-practice –oscillator into the mic and hearing their correct name come back on SSB, resulting in many high fives and grins. The exercise ran from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Contacts were made with 3 Scout camps:

         Camp Barton near Ithaca,
         Camp Tuscorora near Deposit
         and one near Manchester NH.

We thank all the stations that helped make this a great success [in order contacted]:

  • AB2IC John – Downsville, NY

  • K2BSA [op W2JWD Mike] – Camp Barton

  • N2IVW Don – camp Tuscorora

  • KB2E Chuck – Saranac Lake, NY
